What is creation?
The frame is made by bamboo craftsman.
The lantern paste Japanese paper on this bamboo frame.
竹でできた燈籠の骨組みは、竹細工職人によって作られています。
この竹枠に和紙を貼ります。
Yame is a traditional craft town near my home.
I have been friends with the craftspeople in Yame.
They are looking eagerly for each of specialized knowledge.
Read books, go to museums, learn from the work of one’s predecessors,
and move their own hands.
It is same that a calligrapher learn from a lot of scripts.
It is made drop water to just made paper, and dry it.
The handmade paper workshop usually does not accept a private order.
私が注文した手漉き和紙です。
漉きあげたばかりの紙に水を落とし、乾燥させて作る落水紙。
この工房では通常、個人的なオーダーは受け付けていません。
I often use Yame handmade paper for bookbinding.
But the paper does not suit a metal pen.
Because a metal pen catch on paper fiber.
That is the reason I don’t use Japanese handmade paper for calligraphy.
If you use a metal pen, you need to process the paper.
As you know, you can use a brush on the paper.
It is very important that the chemistry between the pen and the paper, isn’t it?

Have you ever seen a Japanese hanging scroll?
Yame handmade paper is used for mounting of hanging scroll.
It is a foundation of Japanese painting and Japanese calligraphy.
Handmade paper for mounting is requested to very hight level quality.
And the quality must always be keeping.
Just craftsmanship.

On the other hand, this workshop challenges a reproduction to lost technique.
A paper thread is a one of them.
They repeated experiments again and again by only a few referring.
It is so creative. I think so.
But they said ” We are not creator. We are craftspeople.”
Because, it is not their original technique, it is an existing technology.
They are humility.
But, they take pride in being craftspeople.

八女は私が住む近くの伝統工芸の町です。
この八女の職人と親しくさせてもらっています。
皆、それぞれの専門分野の知識の探求に熱心で、
本を読み、美術館や博物館へ行き、先人たちの仕事から学び、
自身の手を動かすのです。
それは、カリグラファーがたくさんの写本を参考にするの同じことでしょう。
私は製本に八女の手漉き和紙をよく用います。
しかし、和紙は金属のペン先では書けません。
和紙の繊維がペン先に引っかかるからです。
ですので、カリグラフィーに和紙を使うことはあまりしていません。
金属のペンで書きたい場合は、和紙に加工する必要があります。
ペンと紙の相性はとても重要ですよね。
日本の掛け軸をご存知ですか？
八女和紙は掛け軸の表装に使われています。
日本画や、和書の台紙になります。
表装のプロ相手の仕事なので、とても高い品質を求められます。
そして、それを一定に保たなくてはいけません。
これぞ、職人技。
一方で、こちらの工房では失われた技術の再生にも挑戦されています。
紙の糸はその一つです。
わずかな情報を頼りに何度も試作を繰り返したそうです。
とても創造的だと、私は思います。
しかし、職人さんたちは言うのです。
” 私たちはクリエイターではないです。職人です。” と。
自分たちが生みだした技術ではなく、
すでにあった技術なのだからクリエイターではないのだと。
とても謙虚に言われるのです。
でも、職人であることに誇りを持っています。
創造的とは一体どういうことなのでしょう。
